How to Become an IEC Referral-Generating Machine!

Have you ever wondered how long it will take to pay my bills as an IEC? In today's digital age, building a thriving consultancy practice goes beyond offering excellent services; it's about becoming a referral-generating powerhouse. How do I know this? I grew my college planning business into a financially sustainable practice in my first year through the power of referrals! I’ll walk you through four essential strategies to elevate your consultancy game in this guide. By following these steps, you will attract clients effortlessly and organically so that more families learn how you are a valuable resource in their college planning journey. So, let's dive in!

Get Visible: Make It Easy for Your Clients to Find You

Being an Independent Educational Consultant (IEC) means that on top of attracting clients who can benefit from your services, you also need to educate potential customers on the benefits of college planning. Students and parents need your help, and many families still don’t realize that college planning services exist! In our niche market within education support, seeing is believing. What do I mean by that?  Visibility is the key to making it easy for students and parents to find you. When a former client recommends you to a friend, chances are people will first try to find you online before they reach out. Don’t lose out on potential leads due to lack of visibility. Here are some tips to enhance your online presence:

Updated, professional headshots
—I’m a fan of brand photography to help establish a strong first impression when people encounter you online. If that’s not in the budget, you can use a tool like Aragon.Ai to generate polished photos for your website and marketing materials.

Website
- Your website does not have to be fancy at first. Start off with quality pictures and images, contact details, a summary of what you do, and what services you offer. Over time, tailor it to reflect your distinct brand and personal style.

Google listing
—Establishing a Google listing helps people in your local area find you and enhances SEO, which drives online traffic to your website.

Brochures, Flyers, and Business cards
- Informational materials are still a great way to establish credibility and reinforce your presence. Hand them out at networking events, sponsor booths, and events you host. They help you stay in sight in mind. I recommend using the design app Canva for easy design and print solutions.

Facebook & Instagram-
Students and parents use social media, so make it easy for them to find you on the most popular platforms. Instagram and Facebook are owned by Meta, so it’s easy to create one post and publish it on both platforms simultaneously.

YouTube-
You don’t have to post videos on YouTube regularly, but having a channel is a great place to upload videos that you can later embed into your website or event-listing page.

TikTok-
If you want guidance on TikTok strategies for college counselors, check out Lissett "Bo" Bohannon on Niche for monthly content tips.

Nextdoor-
Nextdoor is a free app that connects you to nearby communities. You can list a business profile and post about your services and specials to spread awareness about your business.

Alignable-
Alginable is a free networking app that connects you to other local professionals or even national business owners, and you can exchange referrals with each other.

How to Grow Your Network

Expanding your network opens doors to new opportunities and referrals. I’ve found that having a winning mindset makes a tremendous difference because, many times, the least obvious people can help you grow your business. You will succeed if you believe there are opportunities everywhere for you. Pulled directly from my experience of growing a sustainable business in my first year of operation, this is how to grow your network effectively:

In the first month of my business's launch, I planned to engage with local support. The following tips will show you how to grow your network with a low budget.

Join a Chamber of Commerce
- You can join any Chamber of Commerce where you want to do business; it doesn’t necessarily have to be affiliated with your town.

Usually, Chamber of Commerce groups have several networking options for you to explore. Visit several and see which ones feel right for you. I’ve developed numerous friendships and business connections by choosing the groups that welcomed and energized me.

Visit the Small Business Development Center-
The SBDC is a state-funded business mentorship program, free for all residents to engage with, regardless of what stage of business you are in.

Not only did I receive guidance from seasoned professionals in marketing, accounting, sales, and operations, but I also made connections with local industry leaders. Look for your local chapter, typically within junior or community college centers.

Seek Local and Regional IEC Networks—
Connect with other educational consultants to support each other and grow together. Remember, more students need guidance than counselors, so let’s collaborate and make new friends!

If you’re not sure where to start looking, contact HECA or IECA for leads. If you’re in the Chicagoland area, contact me, and I will connect you with our local group.

Growing your network is not a short game. By meeting more people and seeking local support, you are planting seeds that will grow and blossom into referrals. If you believe networking is beneficial, then it will be!

Where are YOUR Clients?

Understanding your target audience is crucial for attracting the right clients. Have you clearly outlined who your clients are and how you differentiate from other IECs? If not, contact me via my website, and I will send you a list of journal prompts to help you with this.

Once you understand exactly who your ideal clients are and the unique ways that you serve them, you can successfully identify where your clients are. Getting visible is making it easier for your potential clients to find you. Finding your clients involves proactively going where they are to spread awareness of your services.

Parents regularly thank me for existing. They say, “Wow, I wish I had someone like you when I went to college.” People want and need your guidance! Here is a list of ideas to help you find your potential clients:

Local partnerships-
Partner with local tutors or test-prep specialists so you can refer your students to them, and they can refer their students to you.

Local events-
Think about where parents and teens go in your area and see how you can get involved. This could be a weekly community event or an annual gala.

Workshops and Seminars-
Attend local workshops and seminars for professional development and to meet other professionals with whom you can partner or help their own children with college planning. I recently met a speaker at an event who will help me market a new service I’m offering and introduce me to a professor who may want me to speak to business students at a local community college.

Host Events-
Informational events help spread the word about your business while also providing value to the community. It feels good to share what I know to help my local youth feel more confident about going to college. You can also give corporate presentations at businesses, like lunch-and-learn-style events, for their employees to learn about what you do.

Smart Sponsorships-
You likely won’t have a large marketing budget when starting. You will likely be approached about many sponsorship opportunities. Choose these wisely so you get the most out of your investment. I mainly invest in sponsor booths to meet people face-to-face rather than passively having my logo on a banner.

Harnessing the Referral

Referrals are powerful endorsements that can significantly boost your consultancy business. Referrals can come from clients you work with, people in your community, and other professionals who support what you do. Remember, you are helping people; they are likely truly grateful for your expertise. Here's how to maximize referrals:

Always follow up- Whether you meet with a potential client or are networking with local professionals, always follow up and let them know how they can connect with you.

Ask for feedback-
Take diligent notes as you grow your practice to see what your clients value most. Ask professional contacts about how to improve your marketing materials and ways to improve your elevator pitch.

Ask for testimonials/reviews-
Those who don’t ask don’t get them. More often than not, people are willing to provide feedback. Reviews don’t just help your business; they help other families find the help they need.

Create a template—
Make your life easier with a template! Create a message that reflects your style and simply copy and paste it to ask your clients for their review or testimonial; be sure to include the link to where you want them to post it. The key is to make it easy for your clients to sing their praises.

Strategic pro-bono clients—
You are a counselor because you like to help people. You need to make a living, but it’s common practice in our industry to help some people who are “on the house.”

Referral program- Consider creating a referral incentive or gift for people in your network. One of my core values is reciprocity, so I would like to show my appreciation by offering a referral program to anyone who refers a new family to my college planning business. You know you’re doing it right when it feels good for both parties.
